Curb check your home – what will visitors see?

Walk through your home and property as a prospective buyer would – starting from the minute they drive up.  The key is to remove emotional attachment to your casa and eyeball it like a professional. Keep your lawn, trees and bushes trim, power wash the driveway to remove oil stains, remove the kiddo and pet toys from the area.

And don’t forget those little details!  Make your entry as inviting as possible with fresh paint on the door and trim, a working doorbell  and a wreath. Stage your outdoor areas (think patio, deck and front porch) as you would your inside living spaces – don’t forget some sharp looking exterior sun shades!

De-clutter your home to make it feel bigger

It’s incredible how much we can collect in our homes over the years, what better time to clean out and hold a garage sale? Go room by room to remove as many knick knacks, stray piles of paper and personal treasures as possible.  While you want your home to feel ‘lived in’ and cozy, you also want to keep it feeling airy and customizable for the next family. Keep your bookcases feeling interesting with unique items arranged in groups of 1, 3 or 5.  Add some visual interest

Pay attention to your home’s light sources

Let your rooms benefit by as much natural light as possible.  In addition to washing your windows, be sure to clean all of your blinds, shades and curtains to keep your rooms feeling sparkly. Be sure to pay attention to your other lighting sources too.  Replace old light bulbs and stage your rooms with thoughtfully placed lamps and overhead lighting.  Kitchen counter, stairway and bookcase lighting are easy to add on a budget – light it up!

Refresh your blinds and paint color

While you may have gotten used to that Pepto Bismol pink in the powder room, don’t expect home buyers to feel the same.  Consider a paint refresh in neutral colors to keep your home feeling updated and clean. The same goes for your window blinds and shades – upgrading to a nice wood blind or pretty neutral roman shade for softness is a great way to get your home looking classier on a budget.  It takes minimal effort to replace blinds and adds a lot of visual impact to any space.
