Summer Home Fashion Event, Part 1 - Rustic Home Decorating & How to Get the Look

Not everyone is so gung-ho over modern, minimalist home décor, especially those who love the pastoral ambiance of a country cabin or summer home. There is nothing quite like being surrounded by nature as you sip your favorite wine and breathe in the freshest air anywhere on the planet. That’s the feeling rustic cottage décor can do for your home. You don’t have to own a second home in Aspen to get the look you desire in the home you already have.

Here are some of my favorite rooms that utilize blinds and shades to get that rustic country cottage look:

 

Gorgeous real wood plantations shutters are the ultimate luxury window treatment. The increase the resale value of your home, and infuse your home with nature, especially when done in a natural wood stain, like oak. They're classic and rustic, and they'll last you forever.

These privacy sheers are understated. Why they're perfect for creating that cabin look is because they give you total privacy when you want it, but gently filter morning light so that you wake to a little sun on your face as opposed to the entire sun.

 

Pair white window shading with a country cottage white table with ladder-backed chairs with turned front legs. Toss in a comfy upholstered chair too. If you're a lover of entertaining, you'll be ready to have your friends over for Sunday brunch in no time.

 

Of course, woven wood - also known as bamboo - are a great addition to rustic decor. They're recyclable and made from renewable materials like grasses, rattan, reeds, and sisal. You'll feel good using these in your home, knowing that they're eco-friendly. They bring a bit of the outdoors into the home. 

 

I don't often advocate this, but in a country cottage setting, it works. Match the wood stain of the blinds to the wall color to achieve a cabin feel. if you choose more modern furniture pieces (like the finely upholstered chair above), you'll pull it off well.

I also suggest people check out Paula Deen’s home collection (available in retail stores towards the end of the Summer). Always the queen of the kitchen, Deen has expanded her empire to include a line of furniture perfect for any chic country lodging. You’ll get that rustic, bed-and-breakfast look without looking too eclectic or thrown together. Each piece stands out and speaks for itself. Add one armoire or one four-poster bed, and you can keep the other pieces simple.
