How fabulous are these? Finnish Interior Designer Elina Aalto launched A Better Blind, a line of black, perforated roller shades that resemble city skylines. Each shade is custom made by hand and reflects a unique view of a major international city. The shades are functional, blocking most light and UV rays, as all roller shades do. Below you'll see Helsinki and Tokyo:
Marrying form and function, Aalto manages
to give these standard roller shades a makeover with her unique designs and
perspectives of the cities she features. What is also very unique about these
shades is the depth she creates by using larger and smaller cut-outs. Using
tiny holes in the background and larger ones in the close-up buildings, she recreates
cities with differing views.
As light filters through the cut-out, large-scale buildings
are portrayed on the opposite wall. The resulting effect, when daylight shines
through, is a nighttime view of the city. If you’re homesick for Helsinki or for the tall towers of Tokyo, you’ll feel like you never left. Other cityscapes in the series include Paris and Stockholm.
They are available for purchase at IUKBOX, and are on
display around Europe.
Happy decorating, Photos from IUKBOX.
