Say Goodbye to Plastic Blinds: Oregon Cottage Gets a Window Makeover

UPDATE:  Woo hoo!  Check out the grand reveal here of Shannon’s awesome plantation shutters!

Blogger Shannon Fox of Fox Hollow Cottage had just finished installing her new wood floors, when she and her husband looked around and had a shocking realization.

Here’s what Shannon wrote to her readers:

“Come flash back with me… to the day we completed our new wood floors. Let me share with you the first words out of Jim’s (my husband) mouth when he stood back to admire his handy work;

‘I don’t care what it costs, we have got to get rid of those mini blinds!'”

In their gorgeous new space, crummy plastic blinds were just bringing the look down. She decided to upgrade her old mini blinds to Norman Woodlore Plantation Shutters from or as she calls them, “the holy grail of window coverings”.

Adventures in Flooring

After a refrigerator leak and resulting flood that ruined lots of flooring, Shannon and her husband made lemonade by upgrading the floors to beautiful dark hardwood.

When the floors were nearly done the table saw burst into flames, but with a replacement, they prevailed. All of this craziness on top of a DIY install – that’s  dedication if we’ve ever seen it.

    We also had Plantation Shutters installed throughout our home and I love them! No more window treatments or faded fabric!

  6. What flooring did you use?

  7. I love the plantation shutters but they're expensive and I'm poor, LOL. Now they have the 2 inch wide blinds, which I like. They're the closest things to Plantation Shutters I could afford. They look alot better than those old mini blinds. I put those in my rental unit and boy did they make the windows look nice, especially when you're used to seeing those little mini blinds in windows. Like the Plantation Shutters, you don't need curtains with them because they look so nice. I collect the old staind glass windows that they remove from old houses. I'll hang them in the top window and I mounted the large 2 inch blinds to cover just the bottom window. It looks nice. You don't have to hang old stained glass windows on top, you could just leave it open. With the blinds just covering the bottom half of the window you do get privacy when they're closed. You can still walk around naked and all that will be seen from outside is will be just from the neck up. That's my only tip for the poor that want to update from mini blinds.
