12 Surprising Ways to Use Old Mini Blinds

  • Use blinds to draw straight on a curve
  • Use old mini blinds to spread glue
  • woven basket made of blinds
  • Chandelier made from mini blidns

When you upgrade window treatments, the old blinds don’t have to go straight to the trash. Nor do your free blinds samples that you order when picking out your favorite color.

Some scrap metal and recycling centers accept window blinds, but we got a few ideas for repurposing them around the house after reading this article.

1. Clean Up Crumbs

Like a waiter at a fancy restaurant, use a small aluminum blind slat piece to scoop crumbs off of the table.

2. Pick Up (The Tape) Where You Left Off

Don’t waste time trying to find the end of the tape. A small mini blinds piece will hold your place and doesn’t waste tape like folding over the end does.

3. Draw A Straight Line Around a Curve

Because slats are flexible, they can wrap around chair legs or curves and keep a straight line.

4. Rescue Out-Of-Reach Items

Use a long mini blind slat to swipe lost items out from between cabinets or under furniture.

5. Create A Pour Spout

Tuck a small strip into the mouth of a jar or bottle for instant pourability.

6. Clean Paint Can Grooves

When you’re finished with your painting project, get extra paint back in the can with a mini blinds “scoop.”

7. Spread Out Glue

Whether you’re in the workshop or crafting with the kids, a blinds slat acts as the perfect spreader and keeps fingers clean.

Never mix up parsley and cilantro again! Blinds become reusable garden labels with a little chalkboard paint.

  1. Love these! My favorites are using them as a straight edge on curved surfaces, plant markers, "quickie painters tape", and the chandelier!

  2. Fantastic ideas on reusing your window blinds. I especially like the Starburst Wall Mirror and Chandelier.

Uugh, not sure if some of these justify keeping an old set of miniblinds around, but one tip I will add, is when trimming the length off new aluminum blinds, I'll always leave them a bit long. These bottom strips that never separate, usually remain tightly stacked, and well preserved. In time, as the "active" blinds bend, break, or krinkle I'll have those extra "stacked" strips available to replace with any damaged ones. This way, I'll avoid the need to buy a new set, and thus avoid seeking uses for an old set altogether! (When using the reserve strips, you'll need to trim the excess string off, leaving them with a more precise fit with the window.)

  4. Baskets! Love the basket idea…and the paint tips, and the starburst mirror, and yea…maybe even the chandelier.

When weaving on a loom, I put them after one item and before the next to hold the spacing until fringe can be tied.

I use the mini blind slats when doing laminate work. You can carry a bundle of them with one hand and I have long ago paid for them.
